The Diamond Cuts You're Sleeping On (Or Never Heard Before)

Diamonds are some of the most prized gemstones in the world, but also the most popular. Today, people are looking for more individuality and character even in the engagement rings. Let's dive into some diamond cuts and shapes you may not have heard of before to drive some inspiration!

Step Cut Oval / Step Cut Moval

A twist on the classic oval, a step cut oval is faceted like an emerald cut for a more subtle brilliance but just as much beauty. For an even more slender look you can look into movals, or elongated ovals. A perfect blend of a marquise and oval.

Dutch Marquise

Available in both step cut and brilliant cut (seen above), Dutch Marquise are hexagonal (6 sided) diamonds that give an elongated and modern look, perfect for storytelling.

Criss Cut / Ashoka Cut

Typically found in a cushion shape, criss cut (also called Ashoka for cushions with slightly less facets) is exactly how it sounds. The faceting is alternating inside the stone, giving a very specific look. Many consider it a "best-of-both-worlds" diamond, using the distinct lines of step cuts and the added faceting needed for the sparkle of a brilliant cut. Criss cuts can also be found in the emerald shape, oval shape and more.

Portuguese Cut

A cut style more often seen in gemstones than in diamonds, Portuguese cut is instantly recognizable. Using over 160 facets, this style of cut uses almost triple the amount of facets as a standard round diamond, perfect for those who want intense brilliance. Portuguese cuts can now be found in other shapes too, from cushion to oval.

Lozenge / Octagon / Lucky Cut

A diamond of many names but the same characteristics, this diamond is the perfect mix of sharp lines and elongation. Available both brilliant cut and step cut (shown above), the 8 sided diamond is identified by it's long proportions and sharp edges. The lozenge can also be found in it's more common 4 sided variety but it's traditionally always step cut.

Carre Cut

Another blended cut, the Carre is a stunning modern option with tons of antique character. Essentially a step cut princess cut diamond, Carre's are similar to an Asscher but without the cut corners. Carre's are the perfect way to get a diamond just as uncommon and special as you are.

Antique Asscher

You've heard of an Asscher or Square Emerald cut before, but Antique Asschers are almost never seen or spoken about in modern engagement rings. Not perfectly square but not as long as traditional emerald cuts, Antique Asschers have the classic step cut faceting pattern and cut culet associated with older diamond cuts but in a uncommon shape.

Lily Cut

A great option for those who love diamonds inspired by nature, the Lily Cut blends it's square table with soft rounded petal-like corners to create a stunning and completely original look. This stone is perfect for solitaires or blending with other smaller stones for a cluster. It's design is also similar to a clover, a perfect representation of good luck.

Golconda / Organic Cut

For a truly individualized diamond that can't be compared, look no further than an organic cut diamond. "Golconda" actually refers to a region in present-day India that was one of the first sources of diamonds in history and the first source of the most chemically pure diamonds in the world (Type IIa). Due to early hand-cutting techniques and trying to save as much carat weight from the mined stone as possible, diamonds out of the region were often cut similar to an Old Mine style but in uneven organic looking proportions (like the image above). True organic shapes like this are never the same between stones and are quite difficult to find today but they each tell a story centuries old and are fantastic conversation points (once you get past their beauty).
