HE SAID:
How did you meet Colleen?
We met on Match.com.
How long have you been married?
Two weeks.
Who asked who out and how?
I asked Colleen over the phone.
Where was your first date?
At the Domain in Austin at a bar called The Brass Tap. We were meeting for the first time for after-work drinks.
When did you first know you loved Colleen?
I don’t think that it was a complete switch, but I knew she was a special person when I traveled to Asia for two weeks after our second date. We spoke over the phone for hours, and we would play a game where we would just ask each other questions – personal, crazy, life and love questions. With the time difference being about 12 hours, I would text questions to Colleen so that when she woke up, she had a list of new questions and responses. That went on the entire time we were apart. And then one day, she sent me this song – “Girl Down in Texas” by the Josh Abbott Band. There is a lyric in the song that captured my heart…”Safe in my arms is right where she wants to be. There's a girl down in Texas waitin' on me.”

I made a playlist on Spotify called “Colleen’s Engagement Weekend,” which she almost found as we were headed to Wimberley, TX for the weekend at an Airbnb. We were grilling steaks and having a great time. I started the playlist with all of our favorite songs and some wedding theme/type songs. We were sitting at the table after dinner, and I went to grab the ring box…and fumbled it on the floor. Colleen was like, “What are you doing?” I retrieved it from the floor and then proceeded to tell her how much I loved her and how important it was to have her in my life.
How long have you known Colleen?
Since June of 2018.
What is your favorite thing about Colleen?
She is the most thoughtful and considerate person I know. She pours her heart and soul into people and family.
What is Colleen’s biggest quirk?
She is the cleanest person I know...which is good in times like these!
What is the most romantic thing Colleen’s ever done for you?
I am not sure I can say...there are so many other little things that are important – a touch, a text, a note, a look that lets me know how we feel about each other.
What's Colleen’s favorite thing to do with you?
Going to the dancehalls of Texas and spending time at college football and baseball games since two of our boys play and one coaches.
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
It was simple. It was just us, and we could focus on us.
SHE SAID:
How did you meet Bit?
We met on Match.com. I was divorced for a little over 10 years. After a lot of bad first dates, I feel really lucky to have finally found someone.
How long have you been married?
We married on February 28, 2020, at the Gage Hotel in remote Marathon, Texas. Even though we have five grown boys collectively and are super close with both our families, the ceremony was just the two of us. Its simplicity was perfection.
Who asked who out and how?
After connecting on Match.com, it was obvious that we both had a love for sports and our boys were the same ages making our lives really compatible. A few messages quickly led to a phone call from Bit where he asked me to meet him for drinks after work that week.
Where was your first date?
Our happy hour date in June of 2018 was at a bar in Austin called the Brass Tap. Bit arrived at the bar before me, but when I texted him that I was parking, he came to meet me out front. He is still a total gentleman to this day with little things like opening my car door every time. I will always remember that first moment when I saw him standing there. I had a good feeling about him from the start.
When did you first know you loved Bit?
The morning after our back-to-back first two dates, he flew out for a two-week business trip to Asia. During the trip, we had these intense multi-hour phone conversations. I was protecting my heart but really thought I could quickly fall in love with him. A few weeks later, we were having dinner at his house, and I almost blurted out, "I love you." It's really funny in hindsight, because a few nights later on the phone, he blurted out, "I love you," to me and then felt horrible that the first time was lacking in fanfare.

Bit booked an Airbnb and planned this lovely Texas Hill Country getaway weekend. Our first night there, we two-stepped in the kitchen to a special playlist that he made, enjoyed the sunset and made a steak dinner. After we finished eating, he came back to the table and asked me. He dropped the ring — twice — which made us both laugh really hard. I obviously said yes.
How long have you known Bit?
We met in June of 2018 and bought a house together in September of 2018. Yes, it was fast.
What is your favorite thing about Bit?
So hard to pick one thing. He is smart. He is a loyal gentleman to the core. We also share a love for our boys and sports.
What is Bit's biggest quirk?
Probably that he eats junk, a Hot Pocket or a chicken biscuit, at 6:00 a.m. on weekday mornings after his 5:00 a.m. Peloton ride in our home gym. I guess it's about balance because he is super fit.
What is the most romantic thing Bit's ever done for you?
He ordered me a custom bracelet from All the Wire that says "THERE'S A GIRL DOWN IN TEXAS." This is a line in the Josh Abbot song titled "Girl Down In Texas" that I texted to him during those long phone calls from Asia after our second date. He says it was a pivotal moment in knowing this new relationship had serious potential.
What's Bit's favorite thing to do with you?
I love doing nothing with him at home. But we also have a blast together at football and baseball games and taking in live Texas Country music.
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
I loved the simplicity of it — just us. We decided on something in West Texas at the Gage Hotel by a Brewster County Justice. While standing on the front steps of the hotel dressed in our wedding garb, photographer Shania Du Bose of SD Imagery approached us with a member of the hotel staff asking if they could photograph our wedding and use the pics. We agreed and all laughed about the perfect timing of it for all parties. After the ceremony, we had a casual lunch at The Water Stop in Marfa before heading south on US-67 toward the Mexico border for a few nights under the stars at Willow House and Basecamp Terlingua, which are both about six miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park. This week, we were supposed to head to Ireland for a second honeymoon, but the coronavirus pandemic has forced us to reschedule it.
Colleen on working with Shahla Karimi:
I would also like to add something about my rings from Shahla Karimi. Shahla fulfilled our desire to find a unique engagement ring — and then she outdid herself with my wedding band too. The unusual hexagon diamond v-ring in 14k yellow gold is stunning with my custom oblong-hexagon six diamond wedding band. Her care and creativity are unmatched. We will now call her for any fine jewelry purchases and recommend her to everyone we know.
