What Makes a Diamond "Champagne"?
Diamonds referred to as "champagne" be be in quite a large scale, ranging from soft brown-yellow hues to deep Cognac colors. Traditionally a champagne color is a blend of yellow and brown tones, but can sometimes include whiskey and amber tones. To find the color you like or to know what specific champagne color you're seeing, see below!
How to Find Your Champagne Color
The best way to find the color of a champagne diamond is through it's diamond report. The color will be listed on a diamond report, for example "fancy yellow", but champagne is usually 2 or more colors mixed. On diamond reports when multiple colors are listed, the first color is the overtone and the second color is the main color, for example "Fancy Yellow-Brown". Sometimes, if the overtone color isn't as strong, "Ish" will be added to the color to dictate this, for example "Fancy Yellowish Brown". This is important to keep in mind as you narrow down your champagne preference, such as if you prefer a more yellow leaning champagne stone, you'll want a base color of yellow and only a slight overtone of brown (e.g brown-yellow, brownish-yellow).
You can sometimes find champagne colors in the white scale of diamonds as well. Normally in lower color white diamonds the stone will start to appear with a yellow hue, though sometimes the diamond can have a brown "tinge" (think overtone). Lower color white diamonds can have that perfect shade of champagne when there is a brown tinge alongside the yellow hue. This will also be visible on a stone's report, for example "W-X, Brown".

In the spectrum of "gem-quality" diamonds, light yellow or brown tinted diamonds are the most commonly mined, however since the average buyer sought "perfection" and "colorless" for their diamond, champagne remained largely unpopular until recent decades. Thankfully, this means that you can usually get further with a budget on champagne color stones and they are normally priced significantly lower than white or other fancy color diamonds. However, true Cognac diamonds with undertones of amber or burnt-orange with high saturation can command higher prices due to their rarity in nature and the closing of famous supply mines.
Do Champagne Diamonds Come in Lab?
Despite the CVD diamond growing process actually leaving many diamonds with brown tinge, usually requiring post-growth treatment, it was still extremely uncommon to see many gem-grade lab grown diamonds in a champagne color until recently. With it's rise in popularity, you can now find champagne lab grown diamonds in limited markets but it's important to trust your vendor (and your preferences) to make sure the color is the right mix of brown and yellow for you.
